Rural Development in Nigeria

Rural Development has been a major challenge in Nigeria irrespective of the different laid out governmental policies to help strike a balance between the rural and urban settlements. The rural settlement which has a low population density can greatly boost the Nigerian economy due to their  involvement in Agriculture.

Agriculture is the major occupation in the rural areas as it has been a tradition over time. But due to the neglect of the rural settlements, development in that region has remained unattainable.
Here are the few problems of rural development in Nigeria and how it should be fixed.

1. High level of poverty: The rate of poverty in the rural areas increases drastically as a result of the unallocated budget for rural development. The level of poverty the rural areas are faced with has brought bout Hunger, High Mortality Rate, Ill-health , Mal-nutrition causing them to be unable to carry out day to day activities to put food on their tables.
Focusing on developing the rural areas will bring about increased revenue for the Nigerian economy. The rural area is a small populated place with few homes, so developing such places wouldn’t be an issue but rather a solution cause such places will attract tourists, foreign investors who would invest in agriculture and bring about exportation of farm products.

2. Poor infrastructure facilities: In developing the rural areas, there’s  need for an improved infrastructural facilities to facilitate the development of the rural settlements. Providing a high level of infrastructure facilities will be beneficial to the rural areas in that there would be an increased agricultural productivity that will bring about growth and development, I.e creating better job opportunities, price stability of agriculture products for both the rural and urban inhabitants.
The development of the rural areas can help navigate from subsistence farming to a commercial farming system which will contribute to the economic growth of Nigeria.
