Agriculture And Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)
The sustainable development goals(SDGs) which is a blueprint to achieving a better and sustainable future for all, has shown the importance of agriculture and the necessity of the agricultural sector through the Global goals; No poverty, Zero hunger, which proves that agriculture is the Mainstay of the Nigerian economy. Let’s talk about the Global Goals that is in line with Agriculture sector.
No poverty: The aim of this goal(1) is to end poverty in all of its forms everywhere. But the question here is how? How can we eradicate poverty from our country? Agriculture is a broad sector that is open to all irrespective of your area of pursuit and when we decide to embrace it, we will be shocked as to how the issue of food insecurity will be reduced. And of course, the Government plays an important role in terms of ending poverty. Here are few ways to this approach
* Empowerment: This actually stretches out to different areas, but basically, empowering farmers that are already into farming with the basic farm equipments needed for effective production on the farm is of high importance. Imagine having improved mechanization where the work on the farm can be carried out effectively, with little or no man power? Crop production will be carried out effectively and continuously, bringing about availability of farm products that can be exported and bring about increased revenue for the agricultural sector.
* Trainings: Here, creating awareness to the public is of high relevance, you get to put agriculture out there with all of its benefits, work hand in hand with other agriculturists who are professionals in their fields to train and equip the youths, peasant farmers on the best approach to practicing subsistence agriculture which can help them feed and also sell to generate income for themselves.
Zero Hunger: This goal seeks to achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. The issue of hunger have been a major challenge in many developed and developing countries till today. There have been so many deaths as a result of lack of food to eat thereby causing malnutrition to both the young and the old. Food insecurity which is a major challenge has led to so many homes not being able to afford a three square meal that is a necessity for the growth and nourishment of the body. Where there is no poverty, there’s zero hunger. For zero hunger to be achieved, small scale production should be encouraged by the government, provision of loans and grants for agricultural start-ups, access to farm lands for continuous production, improved technology.
