WHY YOU SHOULD BE SCARED??POST-COVID19

Agriculture which is said to be the ‘Mainstay’ of the Nigerian economy due to her endowment has now become the neglected child.
If there is anything that should wake Nigerians up is the Covid-19. This pandemic has brought into limelight the endured agony of the Agricultural sector and how it’s taking a toll on the Nigerian people. This pandemic has exposed the fall of the Agricultural sector; showing how food insecure we are as a nation, and if the government doesn’t act, in time to come we are likely to face a worst situation compared to what this pandemic has brought before us.
Here are major challenges that should get us disturbed and of course open our eyes to see what is before us.

* Price instability: The issue of price has become rather too alarming in that the rate at which the prices of consumable goods fluctuates at every given opportunity is heartbreaking. Let’s take for instance the price of Garri, that was affordable is now very costly because of this same pandemic and causing food insecurity in different households. But if the Government actually prioritized the Agricultural sector just as they do to the Oil sector, there would be mass production of Garri and other farm products which of course will make food items cheaper and the prices to not be fluctuating at every given opportunity just because these agribusinesses are being controlled by individuals who can actually increase or decrease prices as they see it fit.

* Scarcity: There is still Scarcity in food production irrespective of the Agricultural policy which is to increase production for us to be able to export our farm produce to aid industrial and economic growth. This is as a result of the inadequate allocation of sufficient funds by the government to the agricultural sector to aid production both in quantity and quality to bring about availability of food to the populace as well as ensuring healthy living.
